How to Layer Lighting in a Living Room (Without a Rewire)

Good lighting is rarely about one bright overhead fixture — it's about three layers working together: ambient, task and accent light.

Start with ambient light

This is your base layer — floor lamps or plug-in wall sconces set the overall brightness of the room without needing an electrician.

Add task lighting where you actually need it

A reading lamp beside the sofa, a desk lamp near a workspace — task light should be adjustable and positioned exactly where an activity happens.

Finish with accent light

Small plug-in spotlights or LED strips behind furniture add depth and make a room feel considered rather than flat.

Layer all three with smart plugs or simple dimmers, and you get a living room that changes mood without a single rewire.
